Confessions of a Gay Goddess

There is nothing more daunting than being your true self.

The decision to stop following prescribed societal roles and pressure from close family and friends, can make one buckle under pressure and struggle to find their own identity.

Confessions of a Gay Goddess by Delamo Bentley has decided to share his journey of transitioning into a goddess on Instagram, especially after a rough start of the year.

I felt quite honoured when Delamo asked me to write something about his journey, his views on the LGBTQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,  Transgender, Queer, Intersex and Asexual) community, becoming an ambassador for End of Girl Hate and how Confessions of a Gay Goddess came about.

Delamo believes it is important to still educate people, despite huge strides in informing people on homosexuality on our screens.

The amount of ignorance and hate is still quite astonishing.

"People have a lot to say of your sexuality, especially in places where people aren't educated on the LGBTQIA community, nor is mainstream media, there is a lack of understanding of who we are and what we stand for.”

Delamo grew up in a multi-racial background, "It was very difficult, going to school people wanted you to be straight (heterosexual), people wouldn’t want to accept the term gay or homosexual, my father did not want to accept it, he did it want to believe it, that scared me."

Knowing at a young age of three, identifying and attracted to more feminine things growing up, during school, he was closer to girls who knew who he was and comfortable of being who he was around them.

By grade 6 he knew he was gay, attracted to boys, he struggled to act like a boy or a man.
"I could it play soccer, I could it play cricket, I did it do those things. I was more musical, I sang, I did the concerts that's where my talents lied."

When asked about how he wants to be identified or referred to, answering he or she, both is okay.
Identifying as non-binary, meaning more of she or more feminine. Would prefer the term non-binary. Strongly believing the labelling of people needs to end such as male or female, it does it help.

As a non-binary person, "I came out at 19, I told my mom first, and my family struggled with it. You don't choose this path, I did not speak to my father for a whole year."

"It's not as easy to go out there, to dress up and be who you want to be, it takes guts."
But the pressure of coming out came with a lot of pressure, eventually sinking into depression.

Delamo admits that the road has not been easy. "No road has been easy."
Confession of a Gay Goddess touches on that, it is not just only about the hair, make-up and clothes but to send a message to young gay people that they are loved and respected.

Messages of struggles, love and daily experiences are shared on the page, how each of us can help one other at whatever life throws at us.  Delamo has learnt to develop a tough skin and has found that people have taken advantage of his 'softness'.

The experiences have matched many women, the stares, the whistling, the look, people continuously disturbing your space, it is not an easy thing, and no one should deal with that.
Delamo Bentley opens up to all in Confessions of a Gay Goddess.

The openness has led to the great opportunity of becoming an ambassador for End Girl Hate founded by singer/songwriter Leanne Dlamini.

Despite this huge role, Delamo felt his intentions have been questioned by the LGBTQIA community, his position being questioned,

"I stand by women, for women.”

“Confession of a Gay Goddess is about my lifestyle. I don't think I need to apologise for an initiative that is empowering our women and treat them as queens. It is a worthy cause, I don't think it’s a contradiction, it has the same goal."
Delamo wants the community to support each other more, admitting he has been part of the problem.

"Homophobia starts with ourselves before straight people. We act out first with each other before any other community."

"We need to support one another, not because they are successful because they are in the public eye but supporting women, transgender people, feminine to non– feminine, stop boxing us and each other, inspire the next gay person, stand together before we are anything else we are human beings."
